Biography
Bo Zhang is a Chinese pianist recognized for his refined musical intelligence, technical command, and versatility across solo and chamber repertoire. He is currently pursuing the Graduate Diploma at the New England Conservatory, where he studies with Alessio Bax and Marc-André Hamelin. Zhang previously completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at The Juilliard School, studying under distinguished artists including Shai Wosner, Emanuel Ax, and Matti Raekallio.
As a prizewinner in numerous international competitions, Zhang has received top honors including First Prize at the 2023 Juilliard Piano Competition and First Prize at the 2017 Frédéric Chopin International Piano Competition in Valldemossa. He has also been awarded Second Prize at the Gustav Mahler Prize Piano Competition and was a semifinalist in major international competitions such as the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition (2023), Cleveland International Piano Competition (2024), and the Queen Elisabeth Competition (2025). From 2023 to 2025, he was a recipient of the prestigious Kovner Fellowship at Juilliard.
Zhang has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in major venues across the United States, Europe, and China. Highlights include a Mozart concerto performance at Alice Tully Hall with the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra, solo recitals at Juilliard’s Morse Hall, and performances at Steinway venues in Nanjing and Hangzhou. In 2025, he was featured extensively at leading festivals, including Music@Menlo (nine chamber performances), the Sarasota Music Festival, and the Lieven Piano Festival in Vienna, where he gave multiple solo appearances.
Zhang is also deeply engaged in international festival life, having participated in programs such as Pianofest in the Hamptons, PianoTexas, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival. His artistry has been further shaped through masterclasses with legendary musicians including Arie Vardi, Nelson Freire, and Lang Lang. Recent highlights include his 2025 appearances at Music@Menlo and the Lieven Piano Festival, a solo and chamber performance at Juilliard Station (March 2025), and a solo recital at Morse Hall (February 2025). In April 2026, Zhang participated in a masterclass with Paul Lewis, further refining his interpretations of the classical repertoire.
